Christian plans to study biological sciences and environmental studies to become a physician specializing in pathology. The board was impressed with Christian's scholarship in high school, community service and extracurricular activities, and his athletic excellence.
Germain Medina
Continuing Student Scholarship Recipient 2019
The scholarship committee was impressed with Germain's desire to succeed academically, as he graduated from high school with a 4.17 (out of 4.0) average, attended UC Davis (a 4-yr U.S. university) briefly and excelled with a 4.0 average, but due to finances, he had to transfer to Cabrillo College (a 2-yr college).
Germain is not deterred from striving to achieve his career goal of becoming a nurse to serve his community of Aptos, California in the future, which is rare for a student his age to be determined to continue his studies, even with obstacles.
The Fund is excited to give this scholarship to Germain, and we wish the best for him in his continued studies. We want Germain to know that his academics were stellar, but the committee was more impressed with the time and attention that he put into the application with his essay that was heartfelt and numerous recommendations from high school teachers and college/university professors.
Ashley Maldonado
New Student Scholarship Recipient 2018
Ashley is from Honduras and immigrated to the United States in 2015 after fleeing from economic and political strife in her homeland. Despite all the barriers she faced in her country and learning how to excel in a new country, she graduated with honors and is attending Bloomfield College in New Jersey.

Ashley plans on pursuing a career in Biomedical Engineering and hopes to design prosthetics for people with disabilities. We are excited about her future and especially loved when she said in her personal statement, "In looking back, all the difficulties that I have faced have forged in me to be perseverant and committed. Once I read a proverb that said, “the past is your lesson, the present your gift and the future your motivation.” I have faith in myself and in the opportunities that are given to me here in the United States."

Marissa plans on going to medical school to become a pediatrician in the future. We are excited to support her in her academic pursuits and believe that in the future, she will give back to her community as a prominent physician.
Lia M. Sumner
U.S. Scholarship Recipient 2016
In the Fall of 2016, I was awarded the Donald White Memorial Fund Scholarship.
The Donald White Memorial Fund Scholarship assisted me abundantly during my academic year. This scholarship allowed me to focus on my academics and less on how I will be able to afford my tuition. As the president of an organization and entering my last year of undergraduate education, it became difficult balancing extracurricular commitments, work, and my academic schedule. Through prayers, dedication and this scholarship I was able to achieve a 3.75-grade point average for the fall 2016 semester, one of my highest in my academic journey.
After graduating in May 2018, I will continue my education by pursuing of Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing with focuses in Maternal health and Geriatrics. In six years I desire to partner with a nonprofit organization that focuses on health education in underserved communities.

The advice I would give students who aspire to study beyond high school is never to give up. Higher education may seem out of reach academically or financially, but never let that be a burden. Some days will be more difficult than others. Take all the doubts that appear and use them as fuel to achieve all the academic goals possible. Never stop dreaming and believing!
